High-altitude nuclear explosions near Johnston Island in the latter part of 1962 produced artificial aurorae in the magnetically conjugate region observable from Western Samoa and other Pacific islands. Variations of the conjugate effects in position, intensity and colour with time, and the relationship of these effects with the probable excitation mechanism are discussed.
