Artificial Radiation and Aurora between Kerguelen and the Soviet Union (ARAKS), a joint Soviet-French project involving the injection of electron beams from rockets into the ionosphere and magnetosphere, is discussed. The project, conducted early in 1975, was aimed at studying the production of artificial aurorae, magnetic reflection at the mirror point, and atmospheric backscattering of the injected electrons. Particular attention is given to the more problematic aspects of the project results, such as divergences between measured and predicted conjugate points, the effect of the electron ejection return current on the rocket payloads, and the study of radio waves generated by the electron beam penetrating the plasma.
