A dense-layer version of the standard numerical model of the optics of the earth atmosphere is used to derive approximate formulas for calculating the absorption of radiation in a cloudless atmosphere. Values obtained with the formulas are compared with results of experimental measurements, and it is found that the theoretical values exceed observed values by no more than 20 percent. It is shown that the formulas are also applicable to problems of reflected radiation and to the radiation in atmospheres of other planets.
