The precision and accuracy of geodetic measurements of crustal deformation from interstation vectors, obtained from 1986 through 1989 for central and southern California by GPS satellites over baselines from 50 to 450 km are assessed. The precision of GPS measurements were examined over time scales of a few days and a few years. It was found that, on time scales of a few days, the horizontal precision (characterized by constant and length-dependent terms) was 2 mm, with an additional length dependence of 0.6 and 1.3 parts in 10 to the 8th for the north-south and the east-west components, respectively. The accuracy (defined by the agreement of horizontal components with those found from VLBI) was 5-30 mm for baselines from 200 to 430 km long.
