Gravitational Lensing, Dark Matter Haloes

Scientific paper

Gravitational lensing remains one of the most direct methods we have for the detection of dark matter. As observational abilities improve, it will become possible to map the projected mass distributions of lensing galaxies in detail. Since the equilibrium mass profile of an isolated halo depends on the properties of dark matter, additional constraints on dark matter physics will become possible. However, there are still some unresolved issues about how best to extract the mass profiles from observed images. These relate to taking into account prior information, and whether extended images provide any advantage over point images in terms of information content.
