Estimates of the wind velocity in the Venus atmosphere, obtained by Golitsyn (1973) on the basis of similarity theory, correlate well with Venera-8 data for the lower 10-km thick layer (velocity on the order of 1 to 2 m/sec), but not for the troposphere, where the measured mean mass velocity is 15 m/sec. The velocity profile measured by Venera 8 suggests that the approach proposed by Golitsyn for an atmosphere of the Venus type should be applied separately to the planetary boundary layer and to the free atmosphere. A thermodynamic formula for kinetic energy production is taken as a basis for calculations in each case.
