For the case of nearly conservative scattering, the problem of determination of the radiation field in an inhomogeneous semi-infinite atmosphere as well as in an optically thick slab is considered. The equation of transfer in an infinite medium and in Milne's problem is investigated. The asymptotic formulae for the intensity of the radiation field are obtained. The solution of the characteristic equation is presented for the case of isotropic scattering with the single scattering albedo λ(τ) = exp(-mτ). This solution is compared with the results of exact numerical calculations.
