A new version of the algorithm developed by Binney and Mamon (1982) to study the kinematics of nonrotating spherical hydrostatic self-gravitating systems is presented. The new algorithm is simple and easy to implement and makes it easy to obtain analytical forms of the radial and tangential components of the local velocity-dispersion tensor. To illustrate this the method is applied to clusters of galaxies with different dynamical mass profiles, leading to fully analytical solutions. One especially simple and quite realistic model provides more insight into the known problem concerning the ratio of the specific kinetic energies of galaxies and intracluster gas. It is confirmed that the reported different estimates of this ratio would be evidence of the fact that galaxy orbits are preferentially radially elongated.
