A formula for the Poynting vector flux through the outer boundary of the reconnection region in the magnetosphere is obtained which almost wholly coincides with the Perreault-Akasofu (PA) energy index (epsilon). It is demonstrated that the PA energy function can be explained by a model for the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere which self-consistently accounts for the formation of the magnetic barrier and the development of reconnection processes at the magnetopause.
