A pulsed radio experiment has been devised to investigate whether the irregularities in the sub-peak F2-region which give rise to the fading of radio signals reflected in this region are markedly [`]stretched' in the direction of the Earths' magnetic field at a temperate latitude station. A suitable spacing between receiving sites of the order of twenty wavelengths is chosen such that reflections of different frequencies may be obtained at points on a common field line. The variation with frequency and time of the correlation between all pairs of amplitude fading records, whether frequency or spatially separated, is examined. It is shown that in many cases the N-S dimension of the ground diffraction pattern is greater than that usually obtained by the closely spaced receiver method, and the observed time variations of the correlation coefficients are accounted for by changes of size of the irregularities. All conclusions suggest the absence of any evidence for field alignment of irregularities for the circumstances of this experiment.
