This report defines the role that will be assigned to planetary rovers in the exploration of the Mars surface. It also describes a mission scenario for the French Automatic Planetary Rover project, on the basis of which technical design studies of the rover, its mission, its various subsystems, and the payload as well as the necessary scientific instrument facilities will be performed.
