The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) mission with the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on-board will be used to investigate ice volume and sea level changes. We investigate the application of kriging to data sets of this type. Kriging, a minimum variance unbiased interpolation method, allows us to take advantage of the entire data set, rather than using only selective cross-over locations. Kriging software from the Geostatistical Software Library and User's Guide (http://www.gslib.com) is being modified and tested on the GLAS-similar Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data, and the results will be compared with published elevation changes on Mars based on cross-over analyses. The primary purpose of this study is to test the robustness of kriging in handling very large data sets, and to weigh the advantages/disadvantages of the method against the traditional cross-over approach. MOLA data for mapping periods between February 1999 to August 2001 will be analyzed to produce a time evolution of a kriged map at resolution of approximately 100km by 100km squared blocks. Spectral analysis will be performed on results at the ice caps to verify annual/semi-annual signals published earlier.
