We generalize the conventional transfer-matrix renormalization group (TMRG) method by introducing a series of dual biorthonormal bases for the left and right dominant eigenvectors of the quantum transfer matrix. By biorthonormalizing two reduced set of vectors obtained from the singular-value-decomposition of the reduced density matrix, this biorthonormal TMRG (BTMRG) achieves a significant improvement of numerical stability over conventional TMRG. Numerical simulations on XY and Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains demonstrate that the BTMRG method can reach temperatures at least two orders of magnitude lower than those accessible by conventional TMRG, while retaining the same level of accuracy.
