Several aspects of the deposits formed in the glacial and periglacial environments are presented in order to establish a framework that can be used in various disciplines dealing with sedimentation under glacial and periglacial conditions. The almost unlimited number of different deposits are grouped into 37 types that are all described briefly; most of them are also illustrated by field examples, mainly from Poland. These 37 types are grouped within 23 facies belonging to 3 (continental) glacial, 3 (continental) periglacial and 3 marine periglacial subenvironments. All environments, subenvironments, facies and deposits are defined and presented with a hierarchic code that enables unambiguous definition. Attention is paid to both the general characteristics of the various deposits as they have been described by previous investigators, and to specific deposits that have been studied by the present authors. The factors influencing (peri)glacial sedimentation are discussed briefly.
