Different types of optical devices are discussed, with emphasis on astronomical applications. The basic categories examined include electronographic cameras, integrating television camera tubes, image intensifiers, image photo counting systems, and solid state detectors. For each category, the advantages and disadvantages are mentioned, and individual instruments are discussed.
