Muons: Methods Of Observation
Scientific paper
Ultrahigh energy muons can be used to search for point sources of cosmic rays. Muons produced in the Earth's atmosphere preserve the directionality of the source for energetic neutral primaries. The authors report an analysis of 1.7 million muons seen by the MACRO detector in which they search the sky for sources of excess cosmic ray flux. Observation of such sources may reveal the nature of the source and/or the mediating particle. Additionally, a search for large-scale anisotropies in the sidereal distributions of event arrivals is reported.
