Clusters Of Galaxies: Surveys, Photographic Plates: Image Processing

Scientific paper

A basic problem for the detection of distant clusters of galaxies (redshifts of the order z = 0.5) is the fact that detectors reaching very faint magnitudes (CCD frames) cover only a small fraction of the sky (typically about 20[open square]'), and that wide angle detectors (Schmidt plates), covering a large region of the sky, do not reach sufficiently faint magnitudes. The authors have started a project of using Schmidt plates as detectors, while avoiding the problem of insufficient depth by adding 10 - 12 Schmidt plates of a given high galactic latitude field after digitization.
