The kinematic equations of an inertial navigation system are analyzed. The analysis leads to a quantitative measure for evaluating the sensitivity of a solution of the basic inertial navigation problem to incorrectly formulated initial conditions. The sensitivity estimate is used to determine the law governing the rotation of the system of coordinates. It is shown how this law can be used to decrease the influence of errors in the initial state of a moving body on the navigation accuracy.
