The nonducted propagation of whistlers in the magnetosphere is discussed, with emphasis on the role of the gradient of the electron number density in determining the propagation. In particular, it is shown that for some values of the electron number density and the distance from the center of the earth, the angle between the wave-normal and the magnetic field will become large. The condition under which the electron number density is axially symmetric is also described; in such a case, the low-frequency approximation to the refractivity index may be used, and the equations for the ray paths integrated.
