Solar Activity: Geomagnetic Field

Scientific paper

The authors propose and calculate a new index for the 27-day recurrence of large geomagnetic disturbances for the past 100 years. The time variation in this index is compared against the latitude distribution of solar-magnetic fields and prominences for cycles 20 and 21. They show that the solar-wind flows which lead to significant enhancement of large geomagnetic disturbances and the regular recurrence period of large geomagnetic disturbances during the decline in solar activity at the end of each 11-year solar cycle are correlated with the magnetic field in the preceding 11-year cycle.
