A new equation of state (EOS) for condensed matter above nuclear density
is presented. Several arguments are brought forward why most EOS,
derived from laboratory data, might actually be too stiff. The new EOS
leads to neutron star models with an upper mass limit of 1.56 solar mass
and rotation periods less than 0.5 msec.
