A plastic scintillator, CsI(Tl) ΔE, E telescope, commissioned specifically for the detection of protons produced in medium-energy photon-induced reactions, is described. Initial results using this telescope, from a 16O(γ, p) experiment performed at the University of Lund tagged photon facility, are presented. These show that CsI(Tl) has a resolution of better than 300 keV FWHM at proton energies of ~ 45 MeV, which is more than adequate for such measurements where the observed spectral line widths are generally dominated by target thickness effects. Thus, for such applications CsI(Tl) offers a viable low-cost alternative to high-purity germanium detectors which are commonly used for medium-energy proton spectroscopy.
