The production and the nature of the molecules in diffuse and dense
clouds in interstellar space are discussed. The roles of radiation from
stars and supernovae, of gas flows from stars, and of dust grains in the
production and reactions of these molecules are considered. Possible
pathways to prebiotic molecules are pointed out.
