We propose a deep observation of the bright supersoft X-ray source CAL83 with the LETGS. Combined with the high-sensitivity XMM-Newton/RGS spectrum of this source, the observation will yield a superbly detailed photospheric spectrum, covering the full range between the Wien cutoff and the cutoff imposed by interstellar absorption. We will determine the fundamental stellar parameters and search the spectrum for signatures of exotic effects in the atmosphere of the object.
