The first of the two primary methods that have been successfully applied to the optical selection of quasars, the 'ultraviolet excess' method, is based on the observational evidence that nearly all known quasars with redshift lower than 2.2 show U-B of less than 0.40. The second method involves the search for emission line objects and/or objects with blue continuum on deep 'grism' plates; nearly all radio-quiet quasars with redshift larger than 3 have been found by this technique. The characteristics of the two methods are such that they are most effective when simultaneously applied on the same field. Presently given is a still-preliminary account of the optical search for faint quasars that is being performed with the European Southern Observatory's 3.6-m telescope.
