The morphology of the discrete arcs known as polar cap arcs are studied by means of global auroral imagery from 1972-1979 DMSP satellite observations of the northern and southern high-altitude polar regions. Three types of polar cap arc are distinguished on the basis of their morphology: (1) distinctly sun-aligned arcs; (2) morning/evening polar cap arcs expanded from the auroral oval; and (3) hook-shaped arcs connecting polar cap and oval arcs. Auroral electrojet and IMF concurrent data were used to study the occurrence of the polar cap arcs, showing that type (1) arcs occurred during low electromagnetic activity conditions, and that while bright type (2) arcs occurred during substorm recovery phases, type (3) did not. The observation of type (1) arcs during mostly negative B(x) periods over the northern polar cap, and positive B(x) periods over the southern cap, suggests that the arc types may be non-conjugate.
