In this paper, we point out the possible relevance of certain types of domains and domain walls in the formation of the large-scale structure of the Universe. A certain nonminimal coupling produces a phase transition during the inflationary period. The topological defects produced by this transition are erased during reheating; but before their destruction, these structures have an important influence on the process of galaxy formation. The proposed model allows standard luminous galaxies to be only in the domain walls (void walls) and dark protogalaxies only inside the domains (voids). Thus, the voids are filled by unobserved protogalaxies and the resulting universe appears to be highly homogeneous, in satisfactory agreement with microwave-background-radiation observations.
