The design and operation of the IR camera developed at Royal Observatory, Edinburgh for use on the UKIRT are described, summarizing the report of McLean et al. (1986). The camera is a side-looking cryostat mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the 3.8-m telescope; it employs a 62 x 58 InSb direct-readout detector array with operating temperature 35 K, quantum efficiency 80 percent at 3.0 microns, readout noise 48 electrons, dark current 100 electrons/sec, pixel dimension 76 x 76 microns, and less than 1 percent bad pixels. The objectives of astronomical observations with the camera are discussed and illustrated with sample images, and photographs of the instrument are included.
