Cosmic gamma rays are characterised by their very considerable penetration and by their mode of production in processes covering a vast range of energy. The present brief review covers just some of the gamma ray energy bands where current work is in progress: at the lowest energies, below 106eV, at satellite energies, near 108eV and at the highest energies, above 1014eV. The potential for further advances is indicated, most notably in matters cosmological.
