We briefly describe the ground based atmospheric Cerenkov light technique used to detect very high energy (VHE) gamma rays. We review the evidence for emission from three astronomical sources of widely differing types which 15 years ago was claimed to form a possible basis for an astronomy of many types of gamma ray sources. Recently X-ray binary pulsars have appeared as a promising type of object to produce VHE gamma rays and the present status of observations will be reviewed. An attempt is made to establish patterns in the emissions from X-ray pulsars as an aid to the understanding of the gamma ray production mechanisms. As an example, a simple model to explain the orbital modulation of the VHE emission from Centaurus X-3 will be described.
