STIS long-slit UV and optical spectral imaging and NICMOS narrow-band imaging will be obtained to study SN 1987A and its circumstellar material. These data will create spatially resolved maps of the circumstellar gas in important emission lines to determine the ionization and density structure of the inner ring. They will also map the shock interaction of high-velocity debris with the circumstellar gas. Supernova 1987A is a once-in-a-lifetime event that enhances our understanding of critical late stages of stellar evolution, supernova explosion mechanisms, and the interaction of SN ejecta with the CSM and ISM. The CSM not only tells us about the pre-explosion mass loss of the progenitor, but also the blast of ionizing radiation emitted by the supernova during the first hours of the explosion. We also plan to search for pulsations and thermal emission from the central object inside the supernova debris.
