Open Clusters In The Milky Way, Ultraviolet
Scientific paper
During the March 1995 flight of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT), we obtained ultraviolet (~1600 Å) images of the old open clusters M67, NGC 188, and NGC 6791. These images provide useful test cases for the study of the ultraviolet stellar content of old stellar populations. Sixteen stars are detected on the UIT image of M67, including 11 blue stragglers, four white dwarf candidates, and the yellow giant-white dwarf binary S1040. Our modeling of the S1040 system shows that it is a descendant of a blue straggler, and emphasizes the importance of binary stellar evolution to the integrated ultraviolet flux of old stellar populations. We find two new candidate sdB stars in NGC 188. In NGC 6791, we detect the sdB stars reported by 7, and show that the ultraviolet flux of these stars is consistent with an origin on the extreme horizontal branch.
