Measurements carried out with the Intercosmos-Bulgaria-1300 satellite in the northern and southern polar caps show that, at Bz greater than 0 and /By/ approximately equal to Bz, the convection pattern has an irregular character in both the illuminated (summer) and unilluminated (winter) polar caps. Convection in the direction of the sun occurs only sporadically. The pulsed character of the sunward convection appears to be connected either with a pulsed magnetic-field reconnection process (of FTE event type) or with the development of MHD instabilities.
