Reasons are advanced for questioning the finding of a worldwide jerk in the geomagnetic field around 1970. The reasoning is based on new field models which give approximations of the field through the 1970 timeframe and have no discontinuities in the second derivative jerk around 1970. Attention is given to recent observations by Mizuno (1984) of sudden changes in the secular variation pattern which cover limited areas and do not seem to be related to each other or to the irregularity noted in the European area near 1970.
