From a numerical examination of the effects of the vorticity, the field-aligned plasma flow, and the gradient of the convection speed, it is found that the magnetospheric generation of Region I currents depends predominantly on the plasma pressure gradient and the vorticity of magnetospheric convection, and that the closure of Region II currents is governed by the ionospheric conductivity gradients. The source part of the Region I currents originates from the dynamo regions on closed field lines in the antisunward flow region of the plasma sheet, and on open field lines. The response part of the current originates from the motor region in the sunward flow region of the plasma sheet. Vorticity can be generated by the JxB force through the field-aligned currents, except possibly in the low-latitude boundary layer where the vorticity may be generated by the viscous force to produce field-aligned currents.
