Description of an improved method of measuring the positions of stars by a device placed on the lunar surface in order to determine the rotation elements of the moon and the instrument position. It is recommended that certain principles characteristic of the zenith method and the equal-height method be combined to obtain a device which is free of the defects of either of the two methods alone, and that a modification of Sumner's method be employed to calculate the zenith distance of the star from the distance to the almucantar within limits determined by the frame of a narrow-angle television camera.
