Observed characteristics of discrete auroral arcs and pulsating aurora are described, and a mechanism for the discrete auroras is considered. Strong horizontal and vertical electric fields characterize the discrete auroras, since their motions and their distortions indicate the presence of shear processes involving substantial charge excesses and magnetic field-aligned currents. Pulsating auroras do not exhibit shearing behavior and this lack of shearing shows that substantial electric fields are not involved. Transitional types of auroras, including black aurora, are considered.
