Available data indicate that the influence of solar activity on radio-wave absorption in the midlatitude ionosphere differs from that in the auroral ionosphere. It is shown here that the most probable explanation for the relatively weak solar-activity dependence of absorption in the auroral zone is the weak or inverse variation of background corpuscular fluxes with increasing solar activity.
