The mechanism of the occurrence of periodic structures in the polar ionosphere is investigated. Longitudinal currents and high-energy particle precipitation produce temperature and composition inhomogeneities, which in turn lead to the motion of the ionospheric gas and the development of various hydrodynamic instabilities, one of which, the advection vortex, is studied here. The hydrodynamic equations of a binary mixture are studied analytically with the aim of obtaining a criterion for the occurrence of oscillatory instability. Values of ionospheric-gas velocity are obtained and used to determine the amplitudes of magnetic variations induced by such macroscopic motions.
