Herbig-Haro Objects: Jets, Herbig-Haro Objects: Eruptions

Scientific paper

Eight nearby star forming regions containing Herbig-Haro flows are reviewed, at the same time demonstrating a number of observational techniques useful for studying these objects. A particularly interesting subset of Herbig-Haro objects, the Herbig-Haro jets, are discussed in more detail, with special reference to HH34, HH46/47, HH83 and HH111. Evidence is presented that Herbig-Haro jets are eruptive, repetitive events. The energy sources driving such flows are discussed, and it is argued that accretion episodes in circumstellar disks, manifested as FU Orionis eruptions, may be the triggering mechanism for the jets.
