The consequences of two-dimensional self-consistent theories related to the magnetospheric tail are discussed and compared with experimental findings. It is demonstrated that several of the macroscopic properties of the tail can be understood in terms of a simple two-dimensional picture in which the plasma is static and isotropic. In addition, certain stability properties of the tail can be related directly to simple geometric properties of the unperturbed static configuration. The discussion leads up to the question of the extent to which current stability theory can explain the onset of the magnetospheric substorm.
