The implications of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on
the issue of spin-charge separation are discussed from the viewpoint of
slave-particle RVB theories. It is pointed out that the non-local phase string
is essential to reproduce the two-peak structure experimentally observed in
SrCuO_2. The comparison between 1D and 2D cases is also made.
