An overview is given of Raman and infrared spectroscopic studies of the
inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$, with an emphasis on the magnetic
fluctuations in the uniform, dimerized, and high field phases of this quasi one
dimensional magneto-elastic compound.
