A single analytic function of height is devised that has the flexibility required to represent simultaneously the principal features of the D-, E-, F1- and F2-regions of the ionosphere. Such a function, free of mathematical singularities, is essential for obtaining satisfactory wave-solutions to ionospheric problems using methods more exact than the phase-integral (WKB) approximation. The method is applicable to profiles of atmospheric parameters besides electron density.
