Rate constants k(+) of NO(+).N2 formation between 125 K and 180 K were derived from in situ mass spectrometric measurements of atmospheric ions in the height range 85 to 98 km. At these altitudes temperatures as low as 120 K may be reached which represent the lowest atmospheric temperatures. From the measured ion composition a relation k(+) 3 x 10 to the -31 (300/T) to the fifth/sec is inferred. The NO(+).N2 decomposition rate constant k(-) is estimated to be 3 x 10 to the -13 cu cm/sec at a temperature between 210 K and 220 K when decomposition becomes faster than switching with CO2. The results are compared with laboratory measurements, and aeronomic implications are discussed.
