The effect of planetary tides is cited in developing explanations for the 11-, 22- and 78-year cycles observed in solar activity. In addition, sunspot activity between the years 1132 and 2068 is described on the basis of consideration of planetary tides. Attention is given to the formation of sunspot pairs, the Spoerer effect, the Maunder effect, and the solar differential rotation.
