The conventional dynamo theories and F-layer wind calculations are compared with a more exact solution of the dynamo equations, and the results are interpreted in terms of a simple electrical circuit. The driving mechanism of the atmospheric dynamo, the solar heat input, corresponds to a source voltage with constant amplitude. This voltage has an internal resistance, which depends on the mean density of the dynamo region and on the strength of the geomagnetic field. The atmospheric load resistance is proportional to the inverse height-integrated electric conductivity. However, charge separation induces a secondary electric polarization impedance. It is shown that conventional dynamo theories neglect the internal resistance of the atmospheric electrical circuit, while in the F-layer wind calculations the polarization impedance is neglected.
