A color globe of Mars with a diameter of 27.5 cm and a scale of 1:25,000,000 has been constructed on the basis of cartographic analyses of photographs taken by the Mars 5 and Mariner 9 spacecrafts and photomaps of Mars with scales of 1:25,000,000 and 1:5,000,000. A simple polyconical projection consisting of 12 zones connected at the equator is used to represent the equatorial region of the planet, while the polar regions are conveyed in a normal azimuthal projection with equal spaces between meridians. Two basic problems were solved in constructing the model: (1) the representation of the general nature of the Mars surface relief, types of topography, and their density and combinations; and (2) the distribution of the different topographic features and their morphology.
