A laboratory plasma apparatus, known as the Double Inverse Pinch Device (DIPD), is considered. The DIPD had been designed by Bratenahl and Yeates (1970) to test certain elements of the flare theory proposed by Sweet (1958). The structural aspects of the DIPD field are compared with the structure of fields which might occur in a complex sunspot group. It is found that a close topological relationship exists between the two field types. Transients in a circuit analog are discussed and a description of DIPD experiments is presented. Attention is given to design and operation, quiescent field and flow observations, the conduction mode instability, and impulsive flux transfer events.
