The effect of nonspherical shape for aerosol particles on the phase function for scattering is studied to interpret spectrophotometric data for Mars (the KRFM experiment of the Phobos mission). Use of the Mie theory at an early stage of data processing led to the conclusion that Fe2O3 is present in the material of the Martian surface. The main conclusion of the present paper is that an absorber of such a type must still be present for any particle shape, although the quantitative estimate of its abundance may be lower for particles of irregular shape than for spherical ones.
